At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Hinkley, CA. Whether your needs involve drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise in hair analysis is available across the country, including all major cities, for a seamless testing process. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. These tests are suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized as per specific requirements.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence recently as a preferred method. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts favor it over traditional urine tests. It is particularly favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, the legal system, and probation officers. A key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection period, up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that makes tampering difficult. However, urine tests are still more precise for detecting recent use, within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers of alcohol and other substances within the fibers of the growing strand, providing a long-term record. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to a 3-month period. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. Should scalp hair not be an option, an equal amount of body hair can be used. Here, head hair specifically means scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for determining drug test results encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the first processing phase where a sample is entered into the laboratory's system. This step verifies that the sample was securely sealed and appropriately shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any further data entry required beyond what an electronic chain of custody system provides.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective means to eliminate most drug use suspicions, a positive screen must be validated for court acceptance. Samples that test preliminarily positive in Screening mandate a follow-up confirmation.

In the event of a preliminary positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at far lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenges of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of a positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed before any Confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is scrutinized in accordance with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair qualifications and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: The test yields a timeline of drug consumption over time, rather than solely recent incidents.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing alternatives.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the examination focuses on the strand of hair and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests are favored in Hinkley, CA over traditional urine tests due to improved detection accuracy. Whereas urine tests may overlook long-term use, hair tests effectively unveil substance use over an extended period. Employers thus gain deeper insights into an individual's history, crucial for policy adherence.

The reliability of hair follicle testing stems from its advanced detection methods. Unlike urine tests, they're less prone to false negatives, delivering consistent and trustworthy results. This advantage greatly benefits organizations aiming to uphold drug-free environments.

Another key benefit over urine testing is the observed collection process. Hair tests mitigate common tampering methods found in urine testing, ensuring the integrity of the results. For businesses in Hinkley, CA prioritizing workplace safety, this feature is invaluable.

Extended Detection Window

One of the significant advantages of hair follicle testing in Hinkley, CA is the extended detection window, encompassing close to 90 days. This long period allows employers to gain detailed insights into an individual's drug use history, far beyond the capabilities of typical urine tests.

This prolonged detection range is crucial in making informed decisions regarding hiring and employment. Employers can thus assess long-term substance use trends, providing a broader understanding and context for workforce policies.

The ability to detect drugs over a more protracted timeframe gives organizations the upper hand in ensuring comprehensive assessments. As a result, policies related to drug use can be more effectively enforced, aligning with businesses' commitment to a drug-free workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests conducted in Hinkley, CA are notably tamper-resistant, providing a strong defensive line against sample adulteration. The nature of hair samples makes it difficult for individuals to affect the outcome, ensuring that results remain accurate and trustworthy.

This assurance of reliability is further cemented by the rigorous observed collection process, minimizing the risk of interference. Employers and judicial bodies can confidently rely on the integrity of the obtained results, knowing they are free from manipulation.

For organizations with stringent drug policies, the unquestionable reliability of hair follicle testing stands as a robust deterrent against potential tampering. This aspect reassures employers of maintaining a fair and unbiased approach in their substance control policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
