Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Honey Lake, California. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you require, our specialty is hair testing, and we maintain facilities Nationwide that conduct hair tests. Although 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head is preferred, body hair may also be used. The tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other tailored options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a common method for drug testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests instead of urine tests. This type of testing is favored by zero-tolerance employers, judiciary systems, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of these tests is the extended detection window, which can go up to 90 days, with the collection being supervised, making it extremely difficult to tamper. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Increasingly acknowledged as a vital technique for spotting drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing captures a prolonged record of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of a developing hair strand. With hair taken near the scalp, a detection span for alcohol and other substances can extend up to roughly three months. Hair's collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and it is convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing around 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additions, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If no scalp hair is available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be taken. When we mention head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps involved in the lab processing of a drug testing result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This process involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and transported, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening entails an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides an economical means to exclude drug use in a majority of samples, to be valid in court, a positive screen must undergo confirmation. Samples presumptively positive in Screening require further validation.

If a sample indicates presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is derived from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing represents the most challenging methodology.

Any positive Screening result is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory methodology, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the standards set by ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine testing, which features a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It conveys a timeline of drug use across an interval, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to spot recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair hue and individual differences in hair growth may impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests," these tests evaluate the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
