Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right here in Kenwood, California. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our specialization in hair testing ensures accurate results. With testing locations spread across every city nationwide, obtaining a hair test is convenient. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. Our hair tests cater to detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent in recent times. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer it over traditional urine testing. This method is favored by workplaces observing strict no-drug policies, as well as legal bodies for probation cases. Hair tests provide an extended drug detection timeframe of up to 90 days, are obtained through monitored collection, and are almost impossible to tamper with. However, for drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a crucial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a record of alcohol and drugs over time by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reflect alcohol and drug usage for up to a three-month period. It's easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. By "head hair," we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results is divided into four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not already provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary and efficient way to check for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for clearing the majority of samples, a positive result on Screening must be validated to be admissible legally. Samples that are suspected positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample be suspected positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening among the most challenging methods to execute.

A positive Screening result is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to tamper with: It's notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Archives past usage: It offers a timeline of drug consumption over an extended duration, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to trace recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Individual differences such as hair color and growth rates can influence the metabolite concentrations found in hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", this examination actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Kenwood, CA, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine testing by offering enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Hair analysis can provide a detailed account of an individual's drug use history, making it difficult to evade detection. Unlike urine tests, hair screenings reflect long-term drug habits, presenting an insightful overview for employers.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Kenwood, CA enable substance detection for up to 90 days, offering a thorough view of a person's drug use history. This extended detection window is significantly longer than most other testing methods, assisting employers in evaluating an applicant or employee's past substance behavior comprehensively.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Kenwood, CA, the hair follicle test method drastically reduces tampering risks. Unlike urine tests, which can be susceptible to adulteration, hair samples are collected in a monitored environment, ensuring authenticity and reliability. This decreases the possibility of manipulation and ensures confidence in the test outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
