Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Kerman, CA, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair-based assessments. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, we offer specialized hair testing at centers across the nation. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Our tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to your needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for substance screening. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals often opt for hair over urine tests. Suitable for zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, or probation purposes, hair tests offer a longer detection period of up to 90 days. Although very hard to manipulate, urine tests remain ideal for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a vital means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a repository for alcohol and drug markers by embedding them within the growing hair strand, offering a long-term history of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can reflect a roughly 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drug use. The collection process for hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg, serving as the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to collect 150mg. We suggest determining the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount from body hair may be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair only, whereas body hair includes hair from other regions (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process in drug test evaluation consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning represents the initial stage of integrating a sample into a lab's workflow. This phase involves confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any data entries not captured by electronic custody systems.

Screening signifies a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an efficient way to eliminate chances of drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires subsequent validation for legal acceptance. Samples showing presumed positive results during Screening necessitate a confirmatory analysis.

In instances of presumptive positive results during Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary specimen for further preparation in Extraction. Here, substances are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex procedure.

Verifying any positive findings from Screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation guidelines along with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can trace drug usage up to 90 days, in contrast with urine tests that cover a shorter duration.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Attempting to cheat a hair drug examination is notably challenging, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers chronological use data: It reveals a drug usage trend over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot determine recent consumption: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth diversity can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis targets the hair strand rather than the subcutaneous hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
