Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Kyburz, California. Expertise in hair-based drug and alcohol testing is a standout feature of Accredited Drug Testing, offering their services across numerous testing centers nationwide capable of performing hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body suffices. Testing options include drug, alcohol/ETG, and customized testing protocols.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have been more widely used in the realm of drug testing. More and more employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals choose a hair drug test over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by zero-tolerance employers, judiciary systems, and those under probation. The significant advantage of such tests is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed during collection, and being nearly foolproof. Yet, urine tests remain superior for detecting substance use if ingestion occurred within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an efficient method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair shaft, hair offers an extended trace of alcohol and other substances. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug usage over a span of up to roughly 3 months. It is easy to gather, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. In reference to head hair, we mean only scalp hair, whereas body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of an initial quick assessment for abuse substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates affirmation for court acceptability. Any samples that are presumptive positive in Screening must undergo a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample registers as presumptive positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug examination one of the most challenging approaches.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive specimen is cleansed before confirmation as essential. The whole lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is quite challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, lending more credibility to the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can uncover a pattern of drug usage over a duration, not solely immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to trace recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually have a higher cost than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair pigment and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
