In Lake of the Pines, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. Whether you require a drug or alcohol analysis through hair, we are specialists with facilities Nationwide, ensuring a seamless test experience. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair testing allows examination for substances, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

The inclination towards hair follicle drug testing has risen in recent years. Compared to urine tests, hair tests are favored by employers, courts, and addiction specialists for their zero-tolerance policies. They detect drugs up to 90 days, gathered under supervision, and are virtually tamper-proof. For detecting recent 5-day drug use, however, urine tests still lead.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances by embedding traces within its fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate detection period of up to 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's width) next to the scalp provides about 100mg, an optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels over 10, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing analysis in a laboratory is comprised of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where the sample is incorporated into a lab's system by validating that it was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any other necessary data absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening initiates a preliminary evaluation for the presence of drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug use in most samples, court-admissible results necessitate confirmation after a positive screen. Any samples found presumptive positive during Screening require further validation.

In cases where Screening reveals a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial batch for Extraction. This phase isolates drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug analysis is one of the most complex methodologies.

Any positive Screening outcomes are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing prior to confirmation if needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 credentials.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug consumption over 90 days, compared to urine tests with shorter durations.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It can display a pattern of substance use over time, unlike recent usage detection alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to be costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Result discrepancies: Variations such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
