Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lake San Marcos, California. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our company specializes in hair analysis and boasts centers across every city in the U.S. Must have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head's crown, or other body areas in many scenarios. Hair samples can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing alternatives.

In recent times, drug testing methodologies have increasingly adopted hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial entities, and probationers frequently use hair follicle tests due to their extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected under supervision, it's virtually tamper-proof. Yet, for drug use in the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol patterns. It offers a prolonged timeline of substance use by encapsulating indicators in the hair fibers as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can disclose up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, with low tampering potential, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG assessments and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in the laboratory comprises four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This involves ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary examination for substances. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal validity. Any Screening results that are presumptively positive require subsequent affirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from the hair at a significantly diminished concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair approval and in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time: Hair tests can recognize substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to falsify: It is very challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Offers pattern insights: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing is usually more costly compared to alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
