Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Las Cruces, California. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, boasting nationwide centers capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

In recent times, using hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are useful for employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and on probation individuals. Their main advantage is a longer detection window for drug use, generally up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and challenging to tamper with. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug exposure by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer up to around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion containing approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) at the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the ideal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be used, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a specimen into the lab's workflow. This process includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Even though Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. All samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are quite difficult to cheat, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: Provides an overview of drug usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rate can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Las Cruces, CA: Hair testing offers unparalleled benefits over traditional urine tests, providing superior detection accuracy and reliability. It reveals substance use over an extended period, making it ideal for employers who require stringent drug policies. Additionally, hair tests are less susceptible to tampering and environmental contamination than urine tests.

In contrast, urine tests typically detect recent drug use, giving a narrow snapshot. Hair tests, however, offer a comprehensive overview of a person's substance history, enhancing the reliability of the assessment.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Las Cruces, CA: One of the main advantages of hair follicle testing in Las Cruces, CA, is its extended detection window, covering up to 90 days. This allows employers to gain a thorough understanding of an applicant or employee's substance history. Unlike urine tests, which are limited to recent use, hair tests offer a historical perspective.

This extended window is particularly useful for organizations focused on maintaining long-term drug-free environments. It provides insight into patterns of substance use, aiding in making informed decisions about potential hires or current employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Las Cruces, CA: Hair follicle tests significantly diminish the risk of sample adulteration, offering reliable and indisputable results. The collection process for hair samples is intrinsically difficult to manipulate, which ensures the integrity of the samples. This tamper-resistant nature makes hair testing a preferred method for reliable drug testing in professional environments.

The robustness of this method assures stakeholders of the authenticity of the test results, safeguarding against attempts to alter outcomes seen in other testing techniques.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
