In Las Flores, California, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we have test centers nationwide ready to carry out the procedure. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. The hair sample can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening procedures. Many firms, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair tests over traditional urine samples. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and probation individuals rely on hair tests due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days. This observed process is tough to deceive, yet, for recent drug consumption within the last five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can reveal a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair provides a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands of hair (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplemental testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for obtaining a drug test outcome consists of four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This process includes validating the sample's secure sealing and correct shipping, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary, rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples testing positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample registers as potentially positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex process.

Any positive Screening result is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with potential positive findings are cleansed as needed. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certification to ISO / IEC 17025 specifications.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It provides an overview of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the common reference to "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
