Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examination services in Los Alamos, California. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol screenings, we specialize in such tests and operate testing facilities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method of drug analysis. Numerous employers, legal systems, and addiction professionals favor hair testing over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict drug-free policies, judicial bodies, and those overseeing probationary individuals opt for hair tests due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, which hinders tampering despite not being as effective as urine tests for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now viewed as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month period of alcohol and drug presence. It's easy to collect hair, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An ideal specimen for testing involves a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hairs (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the head, which weighs around 100mg. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We recommend measuring the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean hair from the scalp only. Body hair denotes all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial entry of a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and mailed, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use on most specimens, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples that yield a positive result in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

When a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial collection and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from the hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (like urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Subsequent to a positive Screening, Confirmation is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All preliminary positive samples are cleaned before Confirmation as required. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire lab process is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a narrower time frame.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test proves highly difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Records historical use: It charts a timeline of drug usage, capturing more than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drug traces to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically pricier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the assessment is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to urine tests in Los Alamos, CA, hair tests offer superior detection accuracy. The distinct advantage lies in the extended detection window, making hair tests more reliable for identifying long-term substance use. While urine tests remain popular, their short detection period limits the ability to identify chronic use, where hair testing shines.

Employers aiming to enforce strict drug-free policies benefit immensely from the comprehensive results provided by hair follicle testing. In cases where reliability and thoroughness are paramount, hair testing offers a significant edge over traditional urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

In Los Alamos, CA, hair follicle drug testing is valued for its extensive detection window. Being able to detect substance use up to 90 days back, employers gain a clearer picture of an employee’s history, allowing for better-informed hiring and monitoring decisions. This extended window surpasses the short-term analysis provided by urine tests.

With such a prolonged detection period, hair testing serves as a powerful tool for employers looking to maintain a drug-free workplace. It provides a more complete understanding of an individual's substance use beyond recent weeks or days.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests makes them a preferred choice in Los Alamos, CA. Unlike other testing methods, hair tests are less susceptible to sample adulteration, providing results that can be trusted. This robust reliability makes them ideal for settings that demand high-integrity drug testing practices.

By significantly reducing the risk of tampering, hair follicle tests ensure that efforts to falsify results are futile. This level of security offers peace of mind to employers, legal entities, and individuals relying on precise outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
