Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Los Serranos, CA. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty is hair testing. We maintain testing locations in cities nationwide capable of performing hair tests. Generally, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is necessary. Hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom testing solutions.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has become a more prominent method in drug testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over urine tests. With a longer detection window, up to 90 days, hair follicle tests cater to zero-tolerance workplaces, legal situations, and probationary conditions. They are collected under direct supervision, minimizing cheating potential. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, creating a comprehensive history of drug use. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can reveal substance usage within a window of roughly three months. Collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and transportation is uncomplicated.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, optional components, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for measurement is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a proportional quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four critical stages in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves incorporating a sample into the laboratory’s processes. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and delivered, generates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses additional data entry requirements not already provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial assessment for substances of misuse. As an economical approach, Screening helps dismiss drug presence in most samples, but any positive findings require confirmation for legal acceptability. Presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the sample and prepared for further analysis. Drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), presenting a greater challenge in execution for hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening is pursued using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, any presumptively positive samples undergo washing as needed. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Enhanced cheating resistance: The difficulty in falsifying hair drug results lends more reliability to the outcome.
  • Historical insight: It reflects drug use patterns over time, beyond immediate consumption.

Constraints:

  • Limited recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days before they are traceable in hair.
  • Increased expense: Hair drug screenings have higher costs than many testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth rates may affect drug metabolite levels found in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the examination pertains to the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
