Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Claremont, California. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers available in all cities across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body can be used. Hair tests enable analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method of drug testing. Various entities such as employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over urine tests. Hair follicle testing is a choice for zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation. The main advantage is its extended drug use detection window, up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making it nearly unfeasible to manipulate. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. It offers a long-term history of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair samples can exhibit a detection window of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively difficult to tamper with, and convenient for mailing.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample, approximately 200 strands of hair (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analysis, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It’s advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is composed of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective strategy to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptively positive result in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process, spanning Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: It’s exceedingly difficult to compromise a hair drug test, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a usage pattern over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often more costly than other testing methods.
  • Variable outcomes: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests”, the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
