Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Lucas Valley, CA. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, we're experts in hair analysis and boast testing centers in every city across the nation capable of performing a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other specialized testing options.

Recently, the implementation of drug testing has increasingly included hair follicle analysis. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now mandate a hair drug test instead of the traditional urine test. This method is used by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The primary advantage of hair follicle testing is its extensive detection window for substance use, typically up to 90 days, conducted in an observed manner, and is nearly infallible against cheating attempts. Meanwhile, for more immediate testing of drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. The hair locks biomarkers within the fibers of its growth, offering a retrospective examination of substance use. When clipped near the scalp, the hair sample can supply about a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to falsify, and convenient to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is an ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG assessments, add-ons, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advisable. We advise measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the laboratory handling of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the first handling of a sample within the laboratory framework. This step includes verifying the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening conducts an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient tactic to eliminate drug usage for a majority of samples, any positive screening test necessitates confirmation to be deemed permissible in legal settings. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening mandate a follow-up confirmation.

In cases where the Screening phase yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than other approaches (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug analysis one of the most intricate techniques to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing pre-confirmation if necessary. The complete lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can disclose drug use for up to 90 days compared to urine tests with a shorter detection timeline.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is exceedingly difficult to falsify a hair drug test, providing more trustworthy outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: This method reveals patterns of drug usage over time, as opposed to recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It generally requires 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests typically incur greater costs relative to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the test assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Lucas Valley, CA

Hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. First, it provides superior detection accuracy, identifying drug use over a more extended period which can be crucial for employers and legal entities. Unlike urine tests, hair testing is less prone to manipulation, offering more reliable data.

Another key benefit of hair testing is its immunity to common evasion tactics. This method's resilience to tampering and superior detection capability enable it to reveal substance use that might not be detected in standard urine tests, thus reinforcing compliance and safety standards in workplaces and legal contexts.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Lucas Valley, CA

One of the standout benefits of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window. This method can trace drug use up to 90 days prior, a substantial advantage over other testing techniques. This wide window provides employers a clear insight into an individual's long-term habits, facilitating informed decision-making processes.

Employers gain a comprehensive view of an applicant's substance use record with hair follicle tests. This 90-day detection period allows for a thorough assessment of individuals under consideration, empowering businesses to maintain high standards and ensure reliability and safety among their workforce.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Lucas Valley, CA

Hair follicle drug tests significantly minimize the risk of sample tampering, ensuring dependable and indisputable outcomes. This method's inherent integrity makes it particularly valuable for legal proceedings and workplace assessments where reliability is paramount.

The robustness of hair testing arises from its resistance to adulteration. Unlike urine samples, which can be compromised, hair tests are collected under supervised conditions, maintaining their credibility. This tamper-resistant nature guarantees that results are a true reflection of substance use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
