Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Magalia, California. For those requiring a test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis and operates facilities nationwide capable of conducting these assessments. Typically, hair lengths of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body are necessary. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific evaluations.

The reliance on hair follicle drug tests has surged recently as a preferred method over traditional urine tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often demand hair testing due to its comprehensiveness. This method, favored by zero-tolerance employers, probation officers, and courts, offers an extended detection window—up to 90 days—and is nearly foolproof against tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain superior for identifying recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair Drug Testing

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a record of alcohol and drug exposure over time by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to alter, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch section with approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and verifying. For EtG, additional considerations, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially incorporating a sample into a lab’s system. This includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening economically excludes drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for court admissibility. Any samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the toughest methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair provision and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It is exceptionally hard to circumvent a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate drug use trends over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Magalia, CA
While traditional urine tests have been a staple for detecting drug use, hair follicle tests provide numerous advantages. For one, a longer detection window of up to 90 days far exceeds the few days covered by urine testing. This extended detection allows for extensive substance history analysis, giving more accurate insights into an individual's habits.

Additionally, hair testing's reliability and tamper-resistant nature make it the test of choice. This accuracy and security are valuable in environments where substance use has serious implications, such as work or legal proceedings.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing in Magalia, CA, is unparalleled in its breadth, reaching up to 90 days. This extensive period allows employers to gain thorough insights into an individual's drug use history, surpassing the narrow timeframe of urine testing.

For companies committed to maintaining drug-free workplaces, the comprehensive data provided by hair tests is invaluable. By assessing long-term substance use, businesses can ensure they hire and retain personnel conducive to a safe, compliant work environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Magalia, CA, the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing significantly curtails typical methods of sample adulteration. Unlike urine samples, which are susceptible to tampering, hair tests provide irrefutable results due to the meticulous collection and analysis process.

This security in testing ensures that stakeholders can rely on unaltered, genuine assessments when determining substance use, thereby reducing legal and operational risks in environments requiring steadfast adherence to policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
