At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in March AFB, California. Specializing in hair tests for substances, our nationwide centers are well-equipped to meet your testing needs. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required, with samples taken from either the head or body in most scenarios. Hair testing options can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored solutions.

The hair follicle drug test has become increasingly prevalent in recent years as a method for conducting drug testing. Many organizations, legal entities, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over standard urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are ideal for workplaces enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. Their main advantage over urine tests is the extended detection window of approximately 90 days, combined with an observed collection process that makes tampering nearly impossible. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within the past five days, urine testing remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent means of identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of drugs and alcohol by locking biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easily shippable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advocate for the specimen to be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process comprises four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into a lab’s system. This includes ensuring the sample's seal and proper shipping, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court validity. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positive results in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening results is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the process is reviewed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Shows usage patterns: It can outline a usage pattern over time, not just recent drug use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are typically more expensive than other testing methods.
  • Results variability: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In March AFB, CA, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which are limited to recent drug use, hair tests can detect a substance history over a 90-day period. This extended window offers a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance use, making hair testing an invaluable tool in maintaining a drug-free workplace.

The inherent reliability of hair testing is rooted in its resistance to common evasive tactics, which can often compromise urine tests. This makes hair follicle testing especially valuable to employers who are serious about upholding strict no-drug policies and underscores its status as a superior alternative to more traditional testing methods.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window, offering insights into substance use over the past 90 days in March AFB, CA. This prolonged period allows for a thorough evaluation of an individual's drug history, making it ideal for employers seeking to make informed hiring decisions. By capturing evidence of long-term drug habits, businesses can better assess potential risks associated with their employees or applicants.

For employers keen on fostering a safe and drug-free work environment, the information gleaned from hair follicle testing is invaluable. It grants them the ability to see beyond immediate substance use and gain an understanding of an individual's drug habits over time. The capability to detect prolonged substance use provides companies with a broader context for ensuring workplace safety and compliance.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In March AFB, CA, the use of hair follicle testing significantly minimizes the possibility of sample tampering, ensuring reliable and indisputable results. The integrity of hair samples is inherently resistant to adulteration, unlike some other testing methods, making it a trusted choice for entities seeking reliable results in their drug testing efforts.

With its tamper-resistant nature, hair follicle testing eliminates concerns over sample manipulation, enhancing the validity of the results obtained. This level of reliability is crucial for maintaining fairness and transparency in testing processes, ensuring that all parties can have confidence in the accuracy of the findings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
