Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug evaluations in Menlo Park, California. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair evaluations, with testing facilities across all cities nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on your head or body is used. Hair tests are equipped to check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing selections.

More recently, the approach to drug testing increasingly incorporates hair follicle analyses. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation favor this test. The main advantage is its extended drug detection timeline, reaching up to 90 days, executed under observation, offering substantial challenges to manipulation. Nonetheless, for screening within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained prominence as an influential method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When acquired near the scalp, it can detect substances up to a three-month period for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately akin to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. When we mention head hair, we are exclusively referring to scalp hair. Body hair includes any other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Drug testing in a laboratory involves four fundamental stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the beginning of processing a sample within a laboratory's system. This procedure ensures that the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any supplementary data entry not managed by an electronic custody chain.

Screening is an initial, rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although economical for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive finding in Screening must be substantiated for legal proceedings. Samples indicating presumptive positivity in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during the Screening, additional hair from the primary sample is extracted for further analysis. During Extraction, substances are obtained from hair at much lower concentrations in comparison to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is among the most challenging methodologies.

Confirming any positive results from Screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples indicating presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests present a shorter detection span.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are remarkably difficult to manipulate, ensuring higher result accuracy.
  • Historical analysis: It provides a chronological pattern of drug consumption over an extended timeframe, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It generally requires 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Compared to other drug testing techniques, hair drug tests are usually pricier.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis targets the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
