In Mexican Colony, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug and alcohol examinations. If you require hair testing, we are experts with centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide tailored solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common over recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often prefer hair drug tests over urine tests due to their zero-tolerance policies. These tests provide a significantly longer detection period, often up to 90 days, and are conducted under observation, making cheating nearly impossible. For recent drug use detection, however, urine tests are still more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By trapping biomarkers within the fibers, hair retains a lengthy record of substance use. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection window for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively difficult to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When referencing head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies the sample's secure sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any leftover data entry not provided by an electronic custody tracking system.

Screening offers a preliminary swift evaluation for potential drug use. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most samples, any positive screenings need validation to hold up in court. Any sample showing a presumptive positive in Screening requires subsequent confirmation.

If Screening identifies a sample as presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method to conduct.

Verification of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests where the detection period is shorter.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test proves very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical patterns: This method can reveal drug use trends over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the procedure itself examines the hair strand, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
