Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Mill Valley, CA, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to solution. Whether you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our specialty services across all cities nationwide are equipped to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Our tests can screen for narcotics, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as a preferred method. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often favor hair drug tests over conventional urine sampling. This method is favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation individuals due to its suitability. A key advantage of hair follicle tests is their 90-day detection window, which ensures collected samples are hard to manipulate. For uncovering recent drug use, within five days, urine testing still leads.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair is capable of providing up to a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the hair sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing drug test results are divided into four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step verifies the sample’s seal and shipping integrity, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any additional information required beyond what is provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening includes a preliminary and rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result must be validated to be legally acceptable. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate further verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening process, additional hair is collected from the existing sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is particularly challenging.

Verification of any positive result from Screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The entire lab processing, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a 90-day period, unlike urine tests that have a reduced detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical usage data: It offers insights into drug use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth may influence the level of drug metabolites present.

Note: Although often named "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
