Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Mira Loma, CA. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol testing, our specialty lies in hair testing, with centers across the nation equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair follicle tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored hair analysis options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judiciary, and substance professionals often prefer hair drug tests over urine tests due to their effectiveness. Hair follicle testing serves zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals on probation. The extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, and observed collection make it tough to manipulate. Nonetheless, for recent drug use, urine tests are still the most precise within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust resource for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by securing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. If gathered near the scalp, hair samples can provide nearly a three-month timeframe for identifying alcohol and other substances. Hair samples are straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introductory handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input not conducted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, further hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. In this stage, drugs are removed from hair at a notably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid). Consequently, hair drug screening is considered the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation, as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to manipulate results: Altering hair drug test results is quite challenging, ensuring more accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It illustrates a drug usage pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost issues: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis targets the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outperforms urine tests in Mira Loma, CA, by providing a far more accurate window of detection. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
