Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in Murphys, California. When a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair analysis is unparalleled, with test centers spread across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2-inch hair samples from the scalp or body are required. These tests assess substances like drugs or alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored for customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. This method is favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests support zero-tolerance policies, are used by courts, and required for probation. The main advantage is the extensive detection timeframe, up to 90 days, making it hard to cheat. Nevertheless, for usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeline of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precision in measuring the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test comprises four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This process ensures that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary swift test for abuse drugs. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be accepted in legal contexts. Any samples indicated as presumptively positive in Screening do need further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a sample is presumptively positive, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Positive Screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug screenings can reveal drug consumption history for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine screenings which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Altering a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
