Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Murrieta Hot Springs, CA. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is specialized in hair testing, with testing facilities located across numerous cities nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. For most scenarios, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas can be utilized. Hair assessments can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been a preferred method for drug testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair drug tests instead of the usual urine tests. Hair follicle tests are employed by companies enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and for individuals under probation. The chief advantage of a hair follicle test lies in its extended detection period, which can span up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, making it nearly fraud-proof. Nevertheless, urine tests remain most precise for identifying recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely acknowledged as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug use. The hair strands preserve biomarkers within their fibers, providing an extended history of substance usage. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can give up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, composed of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil), near the scalp, provides 100mg, the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels surpassing 10 types, 150mg is advised. It’s optimal to measure the specimen’s weight on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is inaccessible, an equal portion of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory steps involved in processing a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is preliminarily processed into the laboratory’s system, which involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court viability. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening need an additional confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration in comparison to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

For any positive screening result, Confirmation is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Challenge to compromise: Hair drug tests are extremely hard to manipulate, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Provides contextual data: It can disclose a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Diverse results: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
