Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in North Antelope Valley, California. For those needing hair drug or alcohol tests, we excel in hair testing across our nationwide centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide other tailored testing solutions.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more prominent within drug testing methodologies. Many employers, court systems, and substance abuse experts prefer these tests over standard urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, court systems, and probation officers often utilize these tests. The main advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, with samples collected under direct observation, making evasion extremely difficult. Yet, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the growing strands, offering a longitudinal record of substance use. When trimmed near the scalp, hair can reveal a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process is straightforward, tamper-resistant, and facilitates easy shipping.

Procuring a 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, an optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is advised. Should scalp hair be absent, a similar volume of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug tests consists primarily of four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial incorporation into the laboratory system. Tasks include verifying proper sealing and shipping, assigning a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry absent in electronic chain of custody systems.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment to identify substances. While cost-effective for eliminating drug use in many samples, any positive screen demands confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples with a presumptively positive screening require further confirmation.

For a presumptively positive sample during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This process involves retrieving drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are prewashed as necessary before Confirmation. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation receives oversight under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use over a period of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer shorter detection windows.
  • Resistance to deception: Hair drug tests are challenging to tamper with, enhancing result fidelity.
  • Provision of longitudinal data: Hair tests delineate patterns over time, unlike tests focusing solely on recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapability of detecting recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days post-use to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often entail higher costs relative to alternative methods.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite levels in hair can differ due to factors like hair color and individual growth patterns.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests," these analyses target the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
