Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Pacific Grove, California. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol test you need, we excel in hair testing with facilities available in all cities nationwide, capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body may be used. Hair tests can determine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing options.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has more often incorporated a hair follicle drug examination. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers enforcing strict drug policies, the judiciary, and probationary individuals. A key advantage of hair drug testing is its longer detection timeframe, generally up to 90 days, gathered through an observed procedure, making them tough to falsify. However, for identifying recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective tool for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a long-term overview of alcohol and other drug consumption by embedding biomarkers in the fiber of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can extend up to around a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. When we talk about head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core phases in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This covers verifying the sample's secure sealing and proper shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use in most cases, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Anything that tests presumptively positive in Screening requires a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical records: It reflects a timeline of drug usage over an extended period, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
