In Pajaro, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair alcohol or drug test, we are experts in hair testing and have facilities in every major U.S. city to conduct them. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body is necessary. Hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more popular choice for drug testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation officers rely on hair follicle testing for its extensive detection period, which spans up to 90 days, is collected under supervision, and is nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have gained recognition as an effective resource for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair archives a prolonged history of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of approximately 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair is uncomplicated to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When 'head hair' is mentioned, it refers specifically to scalp hair. 'Body hair' encompasses all other hair varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The quintessential steps consisting of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation form the laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome.

Accessioning is the preparatory handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This procedure involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any extra data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial brisk assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is an economical method to disprove drug use for most samples; however, a positive screen must be substantiated to be permissible in court. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If a sample indicates presumptive positivity during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening incredibly challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. Each laboratory stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, increasing result accuracy.
  • Showcases historical usage: It illustrates drug use trends over time, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
