In Palm Desert County, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair testing and have facilities across all cities Nationwide to accommodate. Normally, a sample needs 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific testing needs.

The preference for hair follicle drug tests has grown, as this method often replaces the traditional urine tests for many employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse experts. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation services opt for hair testing, benefiting from its 90-day drug use detection window. It's collected under supervision, minimizing tampering, but for very recent use, within five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term data by retaining biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol usage for up to three months. This method is straightforward to obtain, tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for testing and validation. For EtG requests, additional tests, or over 10-panel tests, 150mg is preferred. Use a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar amount of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair, while "body hair" indicates facial, axillary, and other types.

Process Overview

The core laboratory stages for a drug testing outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the starter steps of integrating a sample into the lab’s framework, confirming that it is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data not captured by an electronic custody chain.

Screening conducts a preliminary review for drugs. Though efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, positive screenings require confirmation for legal admissibility. Any presumptive positives need a secondary confirmation.

Upon a presumptive Screening positive, additional hair is taken from the first sample for Extraction. Drugs are sieved from hair in lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), making hair drug testing notably complex.

Potential positivity detected during Screening is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary before confirmation. The lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to guidelines under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter span.
  • Cheating is challenging: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, increasing result accuracy.
  • Shows historical usage: This test illustrates drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: Drugs become evident in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variation: Hair color and personal growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
