Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pendleton, California. Whether it's a drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise is in hair testing. With locations in every city nationwide, we make accessing a hair test convenient. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. These analyses can delve into drugs, alcohol/ETG, or even tailored testing solutions.

The popularity of hair follicle drug tests has surged in recent times for drug evaluations. Employers, court systems, and experts in Substance Abuse are now preferring hair tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with stringent no-tolerance drug policies embrace hair testing, as do judicial systems and probation officers. The chief advantage is the extensive 90-day detection span it offers, combined with its monitored collection method, rendering it highly resistant to tampering. Nevertheless, for assessing drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is now recognized as a potent approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and various substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair thread. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of up to around 90 days for alcohol and different substances. Hair collection is easy, mildly challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assays exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When indicating head hair, we are referring solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key steps in processing a drug test result in the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample into a lab's system. This process involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling any additional data entries that aren't available in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient means to rule out drug consumption for most samples, a positive screening result demands confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that test preliminarily positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are preliminarily positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical information: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is of the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
