Based in Pilot Hill, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screening. Our expertise in hair and alcohol testing spans across the nation, providing facilities in every city capable of hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair can be used. Testing options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized assessments.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug tests are preferred for their robust detection capabilities. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over the traditional urine analysis. Utilized by entities enforcing strict drug policies, these tests offer a detection window as long as 90 days with an observed collection, making deceit highly unlikely. Nevertheless, urine tests still lead in identifying recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective mechanism for identifying substance and alcohol use. Hair can capture a long-term picture of substances including alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the strands. Collected close to the scalp, hair reveals approximately a 3-month exposure history for substances including alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp can produce 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and results verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab's system. It ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial swift assessment for substance misuse. While it is economical to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation for court acceptance. Any samples that are presumptively positive at the Screening stage necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initially collected specimen for Extraction. In this step, substances are removed from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing quite challenging.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate substance use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug testing is extremely hard to falsify, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of substance use over a period rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual differences in hair growth can impact the metabolites' concentration within hair.

Note: Although informally termed "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand itself, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and urine tests in Pilot Hill, CA, hair testing proves superior. Accuracy and reliability make hair testing more effective. While urine tests detect recent use, hair testing captures a comprehensive view of long-term substance use, outmatching traditional methods in detecting chronic use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
