In Pine Valley, CA, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Ensure you have 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair or body hair for testing. Hair analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been favored for their efficacy. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for this method over traditional urine tests. Firms with stringent drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services leverage these tests for their longer detection window, up to 90 days, and tamper-resistant processes. However, for detecting very recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeline spanning roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the most suitable amount for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or when the test exceeds 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair is an alternative. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. In contrast, body hair encompasses all other varieties (such as facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for a drug test result entails four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of the sample into the lab’s system. This stage involves ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carrying out any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for controlled substances. While it is an economical method to exclude drug use for most specimens, a confirmed positive result is imperative for legal proceedings. Samples with initial positive results in Screening warrant further confirmation.

When a sample exhibits a potential positive result during Screening, additional hair is collected from the initial specimen for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (like urine or oral fluids), distinguishing hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive result from screening is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every sample that is presumptively positive undergoes cleansing before confirmation as required. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes assessment according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests which have a shorter period of detection.
  • Minimal opportunity for tampering: It is exceptionally challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more credible results.
  • Offers historical utilization information: It can present a usage pattern of drugs over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become identifiable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Variable outcomes: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests outshine traditional urine testing by offering superior detection reliability. In Pine Valley, CA, individuals relying on these tests benefit from comprehensive data on an individual's substance history. Unlike urine tests that have a limited detection window, hair testing provides a broader snapshot of drug consumption, improving the detection accuracy substantially.

Hair follicle testing holds considerable advantages by detecting a wider range of substances over a longer period compared to urine tests. This ability to track substance use history over an extended timeframe enhances its value as a screening tool, offering unmatched insights into recurring substance use.

Extended Detection Window

In Pine Valley, CA, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window that can reveal drug use for up to 90 days. This considerable period is beneficial for employers who seek a comprehensive view of an individual's drug use history, providing a more accurate reflection of an individual's habits or tendencies compared to other methods.

Employers aiming to understand an employee or applicant's substance habits benefit from the prolonged detection window of hair follicle tests. This capability allows for informed decisions, ensuring that stakeholders have a clear and comprehensive understanding of substance intake over time, creating a safer and more trustworthy workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Pine Valley, CA, provides a tamper-resistant method that significantly reduces the possibility of sample adulteration, keeping results reliable and indisputable. Unlike other tests that are more easily manipulated, hair testing offers stronger safeguards and security, ensuring results are trustworthy.

The unique process of collecting a hair sample ensures the fidelity of drug testing results while minimizing the risks associated with tampering. This enhanced reliability is especially valued by organizations aiming to uphold stringent drug-free environments, as the likelihood of interference is greatly minimized, maintaining integrity throughout the assessment phase.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
