Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Pioneer, California. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing, with centers across all cities nationwide equipped for this task. Ideal candidates should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on their crown or body, though body hair can often be used. Hair tests can determine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized further.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals increasingly prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by parties with zero-tolerance policies and is required for those on probation. The main advantage is a longer detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days, with samples collected in a monitored setting making it nearly impossible to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a potent technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a detailed history of alcohol and various drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When extracted near the scalp, hair can present a detection window for alcohol and other drugs extending up to roughly three months. It is easy to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising about 200 strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We advocate weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be procured. When discussing head hair, we are specifically addressing scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This step includes verifying the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any required data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary check for drug abuse. Though Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court validity. Any sample testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitates a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is flagged as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Preparation in the Extraction phase. Drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations in this phase compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples flagged as presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Hair drug testing benefits:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, contrasting urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus the results are more reliable.
  • Historical data provision: It can show a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the test itself analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
