Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Pixley, California. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers across the nation available to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom tests.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly relied on hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests serve zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationary individuals, offering an extended detection window of up to 90 days and are hard to manipulate. However, urine tests are still preferred for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent means to detect the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-term record of drug and alcohol consumption by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. By collecting hair near the scalp, it can provide a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirming tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or when exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair only. The term body hair encompasses all other hair types (face, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially integrated into the lab’s system. This phase includes confirming that the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data entry required that isn't covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Screening provides a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, yet a positive screening must be confirmed for it to be court-admissible. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive in the Screening process, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptive positive are washed as needed before confirmation. The complete laboratory workflow, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in line with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Cheating is difficult: Hair drug tests are challenging to deceive, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Captures historical use: It can depict a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just indicating recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after a period of roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variations: Factors such as hair color and individual rates of hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Pixley, CA, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. The superior detection accuracy and reliability of hair testing methods outshine more conventional tests. Hair samples, unaffected by recent abstention, reveal more accurate data on long-term drug use.

The detection window for hair tests extends far beyond the few days covered by urine tests. Employers, courts, and other entities benefit from this extended insight, using hair follicle testing to enforce stringent zero-tolerance policies with confidence.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Pixley, CA, provide an extended detection window that far exceeds that of other methods, lasting up to 90 days. This extended period offers a comprehensive look at an individual's substance use history, a vital component for employers.

This capacity for extended detection supports informed decision-making for employment and legal assessments. By revealing extended patterns of drug use, hair tests provide employers with a detailed understanding of potential or current employees' habits.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Pixley, CA, hair follicle testing is widely recognized for its tamper-resistant nature. This method significantly lowers the risk of sample adulteration, ensuring that results remain reliable and unquestionable. Attempts to alter outcomes are notably reduced with this testing method.

The rigorous integrity of hair follicle tests lends itself to reliable substance use assessments. Owing to its resistance to tampering, stakeholders can trust the authenticity of the results, making it a preferred choice in drug screening.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
