Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive solutions for hair follicle drug screening in Plainview, California. Catering to both drug and alcohol testing needs, we excel in hair analysis with our extensive network of testing centers across the nation. Typically, hair from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom options.

Recently, drug testing strategies have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now often mandate hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Hair testing gains favor among zero-tolerance employers, the courts, and those on probation for its extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, with stringent collection standards that make tampering nearly impossible. Yet, for assessing recent 5-day drug use, urine tests still prevail as the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within its growing fibers. When obtained from the scalp area, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When indicating head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core procedures involved in laboratory processing of a drug analysis result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes validating that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra data not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening incorporates an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be admissible in legal contexts. Any samples identified as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample is identified as presumptively positive in Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and set for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked as presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical use data: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inconsistency in detecting recent use: It usually takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Plainview, CA is superior to urine analysis in several ways. Its extensive detection period and accuracy make it invaluable for spotting past drug use. For employers, this means enforcing stricter drug-free policies.

While urine tests capture recent drug consumption, hair tests shine in their reliability and minimal risk of tampering, providing a more valid representation of an individual’s substance use history.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Plainview, CA value hair follicle testing for its long detection window, up to 90 days. This extended period provides a holistic view of a subject's drug use history.

Unlike urine tests, which focus on recent drug activity, hair testing offers insights into prolonged use, aiding employers in making informed decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests conducted in Plainview, CA greatly minimize tampering risks. This method ensures integrity and authenticity in results, critical for sensitive employment decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
