In Point Reyes Station, California, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is specialized in hair testing, with centers across all cities Nationwide capable of performing such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body are needed for testing. Hair samples can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other testing options.

In recent years, the hair follicle drug test has become increasingly common for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are opting for a hair test over a standard urine test. These tests are used by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies and by courts for individuals on probation. The main advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection period, generally up to 90 days, with observed collection and minimized cheating risk. For recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It captures long-term drug and alcohol usage histories by entrapping biomarkers within the strands as the hair grows. Hair samples taken near the scalp can offer up to roughly a three-month detection window for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to adulterate, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of nearly 200 strands (around the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test is composed of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial processing into the lab's system, ensuring it was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system might not supply.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it offers a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening will undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate presumptive positivity during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive results from screening are confirmed using methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples presumed positive are washed ahead of confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to evade: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: Hair tests can show patterns of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incidental inability to detect: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing often costs more than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," these tests actually analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
