Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Raisin City, California. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have facilities across all cities nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is sufficient for testing purposes. Hair analysis can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, plus other custom testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has gained prominence in drug testing protocols. Many companies, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals now prefer this method over conventional urine tests. Hair drug tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, legal bodies, and probation officers due to their long detection window of up to 90 days and the difficulty associated with tampering. Yet, for detecting recent substance use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol usage. The hair strands encapsulate biomarkers within their fibers, offering a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and other substances. When collected near the scalp, hair sampling provides an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to obtain, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair—the preferred amount for preliminary and confirmatory screening. For EtG, extended panel testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advocate for weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be utilized. In reference to head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result encompasses four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the sample’s entry into a laboratory’s framework. This phase verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and delivered, assigns a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening signifies an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. While Screening is an economical means to exclude substance usage in the majority of cases, a confirming step is necessary for court acceptance of positive screens. Samples that are presumably positive during Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive presumptively during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), affirming why hair-based analysis is the most intricate approach to conduct.

Confirmation of any screening result indicating positivity is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptively positive samples are laundered as needed. The full laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can determine substance use upwards of 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection range.
  • Resistance to falsification: It’s remarkably tough to falsify a hair drug test, thus enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It can delineate a pattern of substance use over an extended period, rather than just immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Substance traces become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug-testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the procedure scrutinizes the hair strand itself and not the sub-scalp hair follicle

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing with urine testing, hair analysis in Raisin City, CA, is superior in many aspects. Firstly, hair testing offers enhanced detection accuracy, capable of identifying a broader range of substances. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
