Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Rancho Santa Fe, California. Whether you require a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair assessments, with locations nationwide ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body suffice. Hair evaluations can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for substance screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer hair drug tests over standard urine assessments. Such tests serve organizations with zero-tolerance policies and jurisdictions overseeing probationers. Their main advantage lies in their extended drug use detection window, up to 90 days. Observed collection guards against tampering, though urine tests excel for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as a formidable means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lasting timeline of drugs by embedding biomarkers within its strands as they grow. Hair collected near the scalp can reveal alcohol and other drugs over a roughly 3-month timeframe. It is uncomplicated to acquire, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hairs (equal to a #2 pencil in width) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for both screening and validating tests. For EtG, additional services, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar amount of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" implies only scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key procedures executed in the lab for a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is processed as it enters the laboratory system. This involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any missing data not already captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening economically excludes drug use for most samples, a detected positive must be confirmed to be valid legally. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing notably complex.

Any positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accredited according to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests fail to do so over such a period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Avoiding detection during a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage patterns: It provides insight into patterns of drug consumption over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs take 5-7 days post-use to register in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses generally cost more than other test options.
  • Inconsistencies may arise: Factors such as hair coloration and individual growth disparities can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", this examination actually focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
