Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our facility is equipped for hair analysis, with locations across the nation. While hair tests generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, they can detect drugs and alcohol/ETG, providing versatile options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction in the drug testing realm. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine analyses. These tests support zero-tolerance policies with a longer detection span, typically reaching 90 days. Collected under supervision, hair tests are harder to manipulate. Yet, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands can trap drug and alcohol biomarkers, providing extended historical data up to a 3-month span when collected near the scalp. Its collection process is straightforward, making it resistant to tampering and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) harvested nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, an ideal amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. In absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab undertaking a drug test typically follows four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample first enters the lab’s system. This includes checking that the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid analysis for potential drug abuse. Though cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most cases, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally valid. Presumptively positive screenings thus necessitate further confirmation.

For samples flagged as presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at concentrations lower than in methods like urine or oral fluid tests, illustrating why hair drug screening is more complex.

Confirmation of any positive screening must be carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptive positives are pre-washed before confirmation as required. The entire process from Accessioning through Confirmation is validated under the guidelines set forth by CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer shorter detection periods.
  • Lack of cheating potential: Tampering with hair drug tests is extremely challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides temporal usage insights: It charts drug usage patterns more comprehensively over time, unlike tests focused on recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: Detecting drugs in hair takes up to 5-7 days post usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often misapplied, as the test evaluates the actual hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
