Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Rio Linda, California. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis, with facilities in cities nationwide equipped to administer a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is adequate for testing. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

More recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a favored method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse practitioners now often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are employed by those who enforce zero-tolerance policies for drug use, legal authorities, and people on probation. The significant advantage of hair analysis is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, collected under direct observation, making it highly tamper-resistant. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by sequestering biomarkers in the growing hair strand's fibers. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands, akin to a #2 pencil's thickness near the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory-based processing of a drug test involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. It involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other approaches (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: They can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs appear in hair approximately 5-7 days following use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
