Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in Rio Oso, California. If your requirement is a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in this and have centers nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from your head or body. These tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Over recent years, hair follicle tests have become a more prevalent method for drug screenings. Employers, legal systems, and addiction counselors often prefer them over standard urine testing. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with strict anti-drug policies, judicial bodies, and probationers. The key advantage is their longer detection period, up to 90 days, though urine tests remain more accurate for drugs used within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures markers in the strands, providing a historical record of substance use. Collected near the scalp, this method offers up to a 3-month detection span for drugs and alcohol. The collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening. For EtG analysis and broader panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measurement. If scalp hair isn’t available, equivalent body hair can be taken. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (like facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug test results encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the entry point where a sample is processed into the lab’s system, including checking the seal and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data not covered by an electronic documentation system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug substances. It's a cost-effective way to rule out drug use in most samples, but any positive result must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Samples that test positive in Screening undergo a secondary confirmation process.

If a sample is positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug analysis the most complex method to perform.

Confirmation of positive screening results is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection limits of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is challenging to falsify results in a hair drug test, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It traces usage patterns over a time period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests often cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and growth variability can influence the concentration of substance markers in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outshine urine testing in Rio Oso, CA? The answer lies in its superior detection capabilities and reliability. Hair tests provide a broader insight into substance use compared to urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
