Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rolling Hills Estates, California. Should you require a drug or alcohol hair test, we are experts in hair sampling with facilities throughout the nation. A typical test requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body if necessary. Tests can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

In recent developments, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent for monitoring drug use. Courts, companies, and substance abuse specialists now favor hair tests over the traditional urine method. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation services benefit from hair follicle drug tests due to their long detection period of up to 90 days, strict oversight during sampling, and difficulty to falsify. Yet, urine tests remain the preferred method for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collected from near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields approximately 100mg, an optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This ensures that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient measure to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be validated to be acceptable in legal proceedings. Samples that test positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening lead to further extraction of hair from the original specimen for preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging process to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed as needed prior to confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory process, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and is accredited under ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are hard to alter, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: Demonstrates a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs are detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other drug testing options.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
