In Romoland, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. For individuals needing a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers across the country ready to provide the service. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are necessary. These tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various testing needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for substance testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now often choose hair testing over traditional urine tests. It's favored for its extended detection window, up to 90 days, and its nearly cheat-proof, closely supervised collection process. For recent substance use, within the last five days, urine tests still serve as the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strands, hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use. When cut close to the scalp, hair delivers a detection timeframe of approximately three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, comparatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for analysis and validation. For testing such as EtG, additional testing, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We propose measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equal portion of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing within a laboratory's framework. This process ensures proper sealing and dispatch of the sample, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial swift assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly means to eliminate drug usage for most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the main specimen for Extraction preparation. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a noticeably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to undertake.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every sample with a presumptive positive is cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation upholds standards guided by CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty in tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Traces usage patterns: It can depict a timeline of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to trace recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally have a higher cost than other drug test methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and excludes the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
