Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing in Rowland Heights, California. For hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with testing centers available in various cities across the nation to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are required. Hair tests can be used to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

In recent times, the practice of conducting drug tests has increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug testing. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug testing is preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. Its main advantage is the extended detection window for drug use, which generally extends up to 90 days, utilizing an observed collection method, making it almost impossible to manipulate. Meanwhile, urine tests maintain accuracy for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drug use. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, approximately the size of a #2 pencil, consisting of around 200 hair strands, close to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is perfect for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equal amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, the reference is solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid preliminary check for abuse drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage across most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed if needed before confirmation. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Increased security against cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage insights: It reveals patterns of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Cost considerations: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
