Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services throughout San Augustine, California. Whether you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this domain, with multiple testing centers across the country ready to conduct hair analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. Hair tests examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent. Instead of the traditional urine tests, numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug testing. These tests are favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and for individuals on probation. The major advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended detection period, typically spanning up to 90 days, combined with collected observations that make deception nearly impossible. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the growing hair fiber. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window for drugs and alcohol of up to roughly 3 months. Hair is easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch piece of approximately 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The major steps involved in lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated for it to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that exhibit presumptive positive results in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: A hair drug test is incredibly difficult to manipulate, thus increasing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair in approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other types of drug tests.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the test essentially analyzes the strand of hair, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in San Augustine, CA

In San Augustine, hair follicle testing is proving superior to traditional urine tests in numerous ways. The primary benefit is its ability to detect drug use over a significantly extended timeframe compared to urine tests. While urine screenings offer a shorter detection window, hair tests can monitor drug intake up to 90 days.

This comprehensive detection ability of hair tests not only surpasses urine testing in terms of time frame but also enhances reliability. The results are less susceptible to external manipulation or alterations, providing a more accurate picture of an individual's substance use history, making it invaluable for various professional and legal requirements.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
