Accredited Drug Testing offers all-inclusive hair follicle drug tests in San Buenaventura (Ventura), California. If you require hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. We have centers across the nation equipped to carry out hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing practices have increasingly adopted hair follicle testing. This method is being favored over urine tests by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, as well as courts and probation services, often use hair follicle drug tests. A key advantage is the significantly longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, with observed collection making cheating difficult. For detecting recent drug use within 5 days, however, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is recognized as an effective method for identifying usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug-related biomarkers within the fibers of its strands as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair offers an approximate detection window of 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect hair, difficult to tamper with it, and straightforward to transport.

A sample comprising 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, added tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a matching volume of body hair may be used. Head hair denotes only scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result comprises four essential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary assimilation of a sample into a lab's system, entailing verification of intact sealing and appropriate shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input absent in an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs. Although Screening economically eliminates drug use in most samples, a court-acceptable positive result requires confirmation. Samples showing preliminary positivity in Screening necessitate secondary verification.

Upon a preliminary positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for the Extraction phase. In this stage, drug extraction from hair occurs at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of positive results follows via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any preliminary positive samples undergo washing before confirmation where necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug usage over 90 days, versus shorter periods with urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair test results are difficult to falsify, increasing their reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: The test can sketch a timeline of drug use over time, unlike just reflecting recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs only become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing forms.
  • Result variation: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variability can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
