In San Martin, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol assessment via hair sample, Accredited Drug Testing is equipped with nationwide centers adept at conducting such tests. Typically, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp, though body hair can suffice. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various tailored options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a popular method in recent years. Many organizations such as employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists favor it over the traditional urine test. This type of testing is especially relevant for entities who adhere to stringent drug-free policies. Capturing a longer timeframe of drug usage—up to 90 days—through observed sample collection, it presents a challenge to tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the preferred choice for detecting recent use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

The effectiveness of hair testing as a means to detect drug and alcohol consumption has gained recognition. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window for alcohol and other drugs of up to approximately three months. Hair collection is uncomplicated, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximating the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory steps in processing a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid analysis for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use on the majority of samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be admissible in legal contexts. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Preparation. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to perform.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection window.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to cheat, thus providing more reliable results.
  • Historical data: Provides a timeline of drug usage over several months, not limited to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates may affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In San Martin, CA, hair follicle testing offers a significant edge over conventional urine testing. This modern approach ensures superior detection of prolonged substance use, providing results with unmatched accuracy. Unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection span, hair tests excel in uncovering extended drug histories with unparalleled reliability.

Employers in San Martin who seek comprehensive drug use insights benefit from hair follicle testing's extensive detection capabilities. While urine tests only reveal recent consumption, hair tests cover usage over a far longer period, ensuring a thorough understanding of any substance intake activity.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout benefits of hair follicle drug testing in San Martin, CA, is its remarkable ability to detect substance use over an extended timeframe. This method is capable of revealing drug usage for up to 90 days, granting employers a detailed view into an individual's substance use history, far surpassing what traditional testing measures can offer.

This approach equips employers with a clearer picture of any long-term drug use patterns, providing confidence in hiring and employment decisions. By covering three months of substance history, hair follicle tests ensure a well-rounded insight into applicant and employee behaviors, vital for maintaining workplace standards.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Located in San Martin, CA, hair follicle testing offers a robust defense against sample tampering. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
