In Santa Venetia, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol testing is extensive, with facilities conveniently located across the country ready to conduct tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the scalp or other parts of the body for testing. Hair testing can effectively screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific needs.

The method of drug testing has increasingly shifted towards using hair follicle analysis in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair tests rather than traditional urine analyses. Businesses with strict anti-drug policies and courts utilizing probation services benefit significantly. The extended detection capability, usually reaching 90 days, ensures accuracy, is difficult to manipulate, and involves observable collection procedures. Nonetheless, for drug use within a recent 5-day window, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of maturing hair, it offers a prolonged historical account of alcohol and other substance use. When sourced near the scalp, hair can present a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for drugs and alcohol. Obtaining hair is straightforward, moderately hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing approximately 200 strands of hair (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for initial testing and verification. For EtG, additional components, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure of processing a drug test result comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing within a laboratory's system. This entails confirming the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with a positive screening outcome necessitate secondary verification.

If a sample tests positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test positive are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceedingly hard to circumvent a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of substance use over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to be observable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
