In Santa Ynez Valley, CA, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Whether it's hair drug or alcohol testing you need, our expertise in hair testing is backed by a nationwide presence, ensuring accessibility in every city. Typically, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown, but body hair may suffice. We offer analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-made options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has increasingly been favored for drug evaluations. Many employers, court systems, and substance abuse experts are choosing this method over traditional urine tests. Employers with no drug tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation services prefer hair tests for their extended detection period, up to 90 days, and virtually uncheatable observation collection. For detection within the last five days, however, urine tests still provide greater accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged chronicle of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair growing. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 90-day detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, extra analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale is suggested. If head hair isn't accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair might be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair indicates all other forms, like facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The principal phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This involves verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry unmet by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift examination for drugs of abuse. Although a cost-efficient measure to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any Screening samples that are presumptively positive do demand a further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, more hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used for confirming any positive Screening results. Every presumptive positive sample is cleaned before Confirmation if required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug intake for up to 90 days, in contrast with urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption across a span of time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
