Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing throughout Sky Valley, California. For those needing drug or alcohol screening via hair analysis, our specialty lies in these hair tests, with centers available in every city Nationwide equipped to conduct such tests. Normally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed for analysis. Hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Lately, drug testing often includes hair follicle drug assessments. These are favored by many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists over standard urine tests. Hair tests serve companies with strict no-drug-use policies, legal entities, and those on probation. The major advantage of a hair follicle drug test lies in its extended detection timeframe, typically up to 90 days, executed in an observed process, making it hard to tamper with. Still, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain highly precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage through the entrapment of biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. A sample cut near the scalp can detect traces of alcohol and other drugs for up to around 3 months. Collecting hair is uncomplicated, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to send for analysis.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's system, which includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that isn't supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Screening serves as a cost-effective method to negate drug usage in most samples; however, a positive screen requires confirmation to be accepted legally. Samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

If a sample is presumed positive during the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in alternate methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation where needed. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Insight into usage history: It offers insight into usage patterns over time, rather than merely indicating recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot ascertain recent use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing mechanisms.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" often used is a misnomer as the analysis involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Sky Valley, CA, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests by offering enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike traditional urine analyses, hair testing identifies substance use over an extended period, making it a more comprehensive tool for screening. Employers favor hair tests for their robust detection capabilities, reducing the chances of drug use going unnoticed.

One of the supreme advantages of hair tests is their long detection window, which can trace back drug use for up to 90 days. This far exceeds the short timeframe offered by urine tests. As businesses aim for stringent drug-free policies, hair follicle testing proves far more effective, offering unparalleled protection against drug misuse.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Sky Valley, CA provides unparalleled insight into long-term substance use. Detecting drug consumption for up to 90 days, this method delivers a comprehensive profile of an individual's habits. This extended window is unmatched by other testing methods, making it a valuable tool for employers wishing for a thorough understanding of employee behavior.

Unlike short-span urine tests, hair analysis unveils an extensive timeline of usage, enabling informed decision-making. With such detailed historical data at hand, organizations can better align hiring practices with their policies. The broad detection range effectively supports workplace safety and policy adherence.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
