Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Solana Beach, California. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and with testing centers across every city nationwide, accessing a hair test is effortless. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol, ETG, and other customized options.

Over the years, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle testing. This test is favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and people under probation often utilize hair follicle tests. The chief advantage is a prolonged detection window up to 90 days, with samples collected under observation, making them extremely difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective methodology for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of substances by encapsulating biomarkers within its fibers. When retrieved from a position near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection window extending up to 3 months for drugs and alcohol. Its collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprised of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp ensures a sample weight of 100mg, optimum for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair is accepted. "Head hair" denotes scalp hair exclusively, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results comprises four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample’s preliminary processing into a laboratory system. This process entails ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides an economical approach to identifying potential drug use across most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal situations. Any Screening stage presumptive positives necessitate further confirmation.

In case of a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation follows via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS for any positive screening outcomes. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as needed. Every stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, which ensures more reliable results.
  • Reveals patterns: It shows a record of drug use over time, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Despite being often coined "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outshine urine tests in Solana Beach, CA? Hair tests offer superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests only capture recent drug use, hair tests provide a historical picture of substance use. Employers and judicial systems value hair tests for their comprehensive insights over standard urine tests, offering a clearer view of an individual's drug history.

Extended Detection Window

In Solana Beach, CA, hair follicle testing comes with the advantage of an extended detection window, covering drug use over up to 90 days. This method gives employers a detailed overview of an applicant or employee's substance history, providing a more comprehensive perspective that goes far beyond the limits of a urine test, broadening the scope of detection significantly.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Showcasing the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests in Solana Beach, CA, these tests significantly minimize the chance of sample adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
