Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Soquel, California. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we are your experts, providing specialized hair testing across all cities Nationwide. To conduct a test, you'll generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the head or body. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other personalized testing services.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a popular method for drug detection. Multiple employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are chosen by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies and individuals on probation. Hair follicle tests are preferred due to a longer detection window of drug usage, lasting up to 90 days. They offer a monitored collection process, making them almost infallible. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When clipped nearest the scalp, hair can provide an approximate detection period of three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If there is an absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount from body hair may be used. When we refer to head hair, it specifically implies scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary procedures in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial introduction of a sample into a lab’s system. This task includes ensuring that the sample was secured and dispatched appropriately, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in legal contexts. Samples presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing presents the highest level of difficulty in execution.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to falsify: Circumventing a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus yielding more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over a duration, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically have higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," the test specifically examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
