Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in South Coast, California. Whether you require drug or alcohol detection via hair analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in the field, boasting numerous collection sites throughout the U.S., each capable of administering a hair test. Generally, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from either the crown or body hair is necessary. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer various tailored hair testing services.

Over the past few years, hair follicle tests are being increasingly adopted as a method for drug screening. They are now often used by employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts in lieu of standard urine tests. These tests are valued for their utility in enforcing strict no-drug policies at workplaces, meeting court mandates, and monitoring probation compliance. The main advantage of a hair follicle test lies in its extended detection timeframe—up to 90 days—along with its secure, observed collection process that renders tampering nearly impossible. Nevertheless, for substances taken within the previous five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug exposure through biomarkers embedded in the hair's growing structure. Collected near the scalp, hair samples can reveal substance use over a span of roughly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, fairly tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipment.

A 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't an option, a similar quantity of body hair is suitable. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair; body hair includes other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test outcome in a lab comprises four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the first stage of incorporating a sample into a laboratory's records. This process verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. Though Screening is economical for negating drug use in most cases, any positive findings must be confirmed to hold up in court. Samples with a tentative positive result in Screening need further verification.

Should a sample test positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original batch and set for Extraction. Here, drugs are derived from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other types, such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug analysis particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive test discovered is performed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire analytical process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can indicate drug use over a 90-day period, unlike urine assessments which have a more limited detection window.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring higher accuracy of results.
  • Offers a pattern of use: It can illustrate a prolonged history of drug use, rather than just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect new consumption: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense factor: Typically, hair drug tests cost more relative to alternative drug screening types.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the levels of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand and does not analyze the follicle part beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
