Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses in South Laguna, California. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our specialty at Accredited Drug Testing is precisely that. We have facilities throughout all cities nationwide ready to carry out this service. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. Hair testing can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized assessments.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent as a method of screening for substance use. Many employers, judicial systems, and professionals in Substance Abuse now opt for hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary entities utilize hair tests. The main advantage of these tests is their expanded detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making manipulation nearly impossible. However, for recent drug use within a 5-day span, urine testing remains the preferred method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a valuable resource for the identification of drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by preserving biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. It is simple to collect, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch length consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for examination and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When addressing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s framework. This involves validating the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial quick assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal scenarios. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in concentrations lower than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is very challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, making results more reliable.
  • Provides usage history: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over a duration, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in South Laguna, CA outshines traditional urine testing by offering superior detection accuracy. Hair tests can detect drug use over an extended period, reducing false negatives. Unlike urine tests, which have shorter detection windows, hair testing allows for thorough and reliable analysis, granting employers a more comprehensive understanding of potential substance use among employees.

  • Extended detection window offers in-depth insight
  • Reduces likelihood of manipulation or evasion
  • Dependable results build trust in testing practices

Extended Detection Window

In South Laguna, CA, hair follicle tests are valued for their extended detection window. They can uncover drug usage history up to 90 days prior, offering employers a detailed view of an individual’s substance use. This is critical for employers who want to ensure their teams remain drug-free, providing a longer period over which usage can be tracked compared to traditional methods.

  • 90-day detection reveals past drug use
  • Gives employers comprehensive substance history
  • Enhances background checks and screenings

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in South Laguna, CA provides a tamper-resistant testing method, significantly minimizing the chances of sample manipulation. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
